Faith is the third studio album by English rock band The Cure, released on 14 April 1981. Preceded by the single „Primary“, the album was a moderate success commercially but was received ambivalently by critics. Faith saw The Cure continuing in the gloomy vein of 1980’s Seventeen Seconds, which would conclude with the band’s next album, Pornography. Following the tour for Seventeen Seconds, The Cure returned to Morgan Studios on 27 September 1980 to record a new album. During this session, recordings of songs „All Cats Are Grey“ and „Primary“ were attempted, but neither ended up on the album. Robert Smith was hoping the tracks would sound „funereal“, but instead he said „they just sounded dull“. Most of Faith was written in the studio. At least two songs on the album, „All Cats Are Grey“ and „The Drowning Man“, were inspired by the Gormenghast novels of Mervyn Peake. Faith was the first album by The Cure to feature six-string bass guitar; „All Cats Are Grey“ features Smith on keyboards and piano, with no guitar at all. The album includes Jet’s most popular song, „Are You Gonna Be My Girl“. – Jet entered the Sunset Sound Studios in Los Angeles with Dave Sardy to produce their debut album Get Born. Sardy had previously produced records for Marilyn Manson and The Dandy Warhols. The band left the recording studios halfway through recording the album to fly back to support the Rolling Stones on their 2003 Australian tour. – „Are You Gonna Be My Girl“, from this album, was voted number one in the 2003 Triple J Hottest 100. Get Born also has a song, „Timothy“, dedicated to guitarist Cameron Muncey’s brother, who died when he was a baby (the song has also been remixed for American rapper Timbaland’s 2009 album Shock Value II). The track „Radio Song“ was written about when they were an unsigned band in Melbourne seeking attention, and „Rollover DJ“ was written about the difficulty they encountered when trying to play gigs because of the takeover of dance music. – The album’s name was derived from a lyric to the Bob Dylan song „Subterranean Homesick Blues“. Seventeen Seconds is the second studio album by English rock band The Cure, recorded at Morgan Studio and released on 22 April 1980. Seventeen Seconds established the group’s gloomy sound that would continue until 1982’s Pornography. It is the only Cure album to feature keyboardist Matthieu Hartley. Inspiration was very high for the album, as Robert Smith wrote the lyrics and music for most of the record on just two occasions. Most of the music was composed by Smith in his parents‘ home, on a Hammond organ with a built-in tape recorder. Interviewed in 2004, producer Mike Hedges does not recall any demo tracks, with the band generally playing the track in the studio before laying down a backing track to which overdubs were added. Two members of The Magazine Spies, bass guitarist Simon Gallup and keyboardist Matthieu Hartley, were added to the band’s lineup. Gallup replaced Michael Dempsey, which relieved Smith as he felt Dempsey’s basslines were too ornate and that they weren’t getting on socially. Hartley’s synth work added a new dimension to the band’s newly ethereal sound, although Smith and he clashed over complexity (Hartley enjoyed complex chords; Smith wanted single notes).© DirectToU LLC.
