The film adaptation by director Edgar Wright (Hot Fuzz, Baby Driver) of Bryan Lee O’Malley’s graphic novel series stars Michael Cera, Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Kieran Culkin and has since become a cult classic. This marks the first time ever that Godrich’s score will get a vinyl release, which will be available on a blue vinyl 2-LP set, also on March 26. Also, available in a deluxe 4LP „Seven Evil Exes“ picture disc set. Scott Pilgrim vs. the World finds Cera’s character smitten by Ramona Flowers (Winstead) and having to battle her seven evil exes who are out to kill him. Interwoven into the plot is a plethora of fictitious music groups acting out the performances of original compositions by real recording artists. Under the direction of producer Godrich (Radiohead, Paul McCartney, U2), Beck provided the music for Scott’s low-fi garage band Sex Bob-Omb, Canadian synth-rockers Metric did the same for The Clash at Demonhead (fronted by Brie Larson), Broken Social Scene wrote and recorded for Crash and the Boys, and faux DJ duo Katayanagi Twins were brought to life by Cornelius. The original soundtrack, which went to #2 on the Billboard soundtrack chart, also includes songs by Frank Black, Beachwood Sparks, Black Lips, T. Rex, Blood Red Shoes, The Rolling Stones and The Bluetones. Edgar Wright, who in the last decade has written/directed The World’s End and Baby Driver and has directed the upcoming psychological thriller Last Night in Soho, waxes nostalgic about the music of Scott Pilgrim vs. the World. He commented, „It’s been ten years since Scott Pilgrim first made it to the big screen and I think the fact that it’s become so enshrined in the consciousness of so many for so long is due, in no small part, to the fact that the action was so music-driven. The Scott Pilgrim soundtrack and the score have played a huge role in making this an enduring phenomenon.“ Since its release, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) has received many accolades. On the title track of 1976’s Zombie, Fela and the backup singers ridicule the mindset of men in uniform over an urgent, quick-march accompaniment from Afrika 70. „Attention! Quick march! Slow march! Salute!“ sings Fela, „Fall in! Fall out! Fall down! Go and kill! Go and die! Go and quench!“ Each phrase is followed by the women singers‘ taunting response, „Zombie!“ Just a few months later on 18 February, 1977, around 1,000 soldiers, most of them armed, swooped on the Kalakuta Republic. Fela was badly beaten, sustaining a fractured skull and several broken bones. His mother, then aged 77, was thrown out of a window, fracturing a leg and suffering deep trauma. The army then set fire to the compound and prevented the fire brigade reaching the area. The blaze gutted the premises, destroying six Afrika 70 vehicles, all Fela’s master tapes and band equipment, a four-track recording studio, all the residents‘ belongings and, for good measure, the free medical clinic run by Fela’s brother, Dr Beko Ransome Kuti (who was also severely beaten in the attack). Exuberant crowds, still giddy from independence achieved a decade prior, grooved to the sounds of the country’s classics. In fact, the whole continent was submerged in the Congolese rumba craze. Encouraged by the fantastic productions of the Ngoma label, vibrant radio waves had been spreading the Congo’s sounds from Leopoldville across the continent, making these tunes the country’s top export. This unexpected success nurtured a wealth of talented musicians. One of them was Verckys, born Georges Mateta Kiamuangana. At age 18, he became a member of the country’s most dominant and influential band: Franco Luambo’s OK Jazz. This relationship was short-lived, however, as Verckys, now a versatile and potent multi-instrumentalist, had plans of his own: The formation of Orchester V+-v+- in 1968, with the aim of reinventing and modernizing the Congolese sound. Blending the ever-influential prowess of James Brown with Congolese merengue, rumba, and soukous, Verckys stripped away the conventional approach that OK Jazz had pioneered, allowing his saxophone-laced melodies to dominate. Verckys also began recording young urban artists with guitar driven cavacha sounds and releasing their work on his label, Les Editions Veve; Les Freres Soki, Bella Bella, Orchestre Kiam, and others shot to stardom overnight, making Verckys quite wealthy. But that wasn’t enough for a man with a vision. He built a sprawling entertainment complex called Veve Centre and oversaw the construction of the Congo’s most modern recording studio in Kinshasa, in which he recorded the legendary Tabu Lay Rochereau. Orchestre Veve’s popularity poured across borders and in 1974 the band travelled to Kenya for a two-month tour. James Brown, upon seeing Verckys perform that year, was moved to dub him „Mister Dynamite.“ „Bassala Hot,“ „Cheka Sana,“ and „Talali Talala“ were some of the tracks recorded in Nairobi for the Kenyan market, songs which are now available to the ears of the world for the very first time. There’s alien keyboard sounds in „Better Change Your Mind,“ an organ solo in „Ifa“ and funky Afro-beat in „Love’s A Real Thing.“ A great survey of west Africa altogether, this album is an excellent entry point for the new listener.
